DOHA, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese table tennis player Wang Chuqin has been attracting buzz for his serves since he started sweeping titles in 2022.
His straight-set win over American Nandan Naresh in their opening round of the world table tennis championships on Saturday night included a moment of controversy when a serve by the world No. 2 was called illegal due to an alleged angling violation. However, Wang successfully overturned the decision with a video review, stating afterward, "I have confidence in my serves."
A leading sports professor in China hailed the Hawk-Eye technology as "an important advance in the table tennis history."
"Humans make mistakes. That's why we need the help of cameras," said Sun Qilin, a tenured professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University who is also an international umpire in table tennis.
"Capturing a table tennis ball travelling at 70 mph with 150 spins per second with human eyes is never an easy job. Hawk-Eye helps make the game fairer."
The Hawk-Eye technology was introduced to table tennis in 2019 and the ITTF executive committee decided last year to use it in the 2025 world championships. ■
